Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma, Hot Emily, Miranda May Hot Lips Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

charlotte tilbury secret salma

She has normal-to-dry skin with occasional dryness on cheeks and nose. She has a light plus skintone with subtle, warmer yellow undertones (view her foundation matches here). This blog accepts free products, services, travel, event tickets, and other forms of compensation from companies and organizations. All products are purchased with personal funds, unless otherwise stated. It is interesting to note that the price for this range has been kept the same as her existing one. Yes, you may argue that the packaging and weight, etc., is all same.

"Wearable, ultra-pigmented lipstick."

Bite Beauty Stinger (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Melted Melon (P, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). Estee Lauder High Level (DC, $32.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain #43 (P, $36.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar).

HOLLYWOOD GLOW GLIDE FACE ARCHITECT HIGHLIGHTERMOONLIT GLOW

Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, medium rosy mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque coverage that went on evenly and smoothly. The texture was thinner and clung, but it didn’t emphasize texture like some of the other shades have. It wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. NARS London Clinic (LE, $27.00) is lighter (95% similar). Hourglass My One Desire (LE, $34.00) is lighter, glossier (95% similar).

HOLLYWOOD FLAWLESS RADIANT GLOW DUOFACE KIT

ColourPop Buttercup (P, $9.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Cured (LE, $5.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty #068 (P, $18.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). ColourPop Oasis (LE, $10.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar).

Charlotte Tilbury Hot Emily Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright, medium orange-coral with warm undertones and a creamy, lightly glossy finish. It had very nearly opaque pigmentation with a smooth, creamy, and comfortable consistency that sat well on the lips. It applied evenly and lasted for four hours on me, while the formula was lightly hydrating.

ColourPop On a Stick (DC, $5.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Dulcet (LE, $6.50) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Eclosion (134) (P, $40.00) is darker (90% similar). MATTE REVOLUTION LIP KITMAKEUP KIT

This one is my favourite of the bunch, because it could easily compliment any look. The views and opinions expressed on this blog are purely the blog owners. We will accept samples for review consideration, but we do not have to feature everything – it is up to our discretion. Any product claim, statistic, quote or other representation about a product or service should be verified with the manufacturer or provider. The lipsticks are housed in a beautiful rose gold tube, with the Charlotte Tilbury logo topping off the cap.

Tom Ford Beauty Jackie (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Sephora CEO (13) (P, $13.00) is cooler, glossier (85% similar). Create the illusion of fuller, wider lips with my Matte Revolution – for lips that look lit from within. It’s a trick I use all the time on photo shoots, using lighting trickery, pigments and powders, and have been working for years to re-create this effect in the slick of 1 lipstick. Now everyone can create this full, matte lip effect in a long-lasting, buildable, hydrating formula – it’s the matte lipstick of the future! Available in 10 modern-matte shades for all skin tones – 1 for each of my signature looks.

The Swatch Gallery™

The Kissing range is creamier, light-medium in weight, comfortable and hydrating, and average wearing (three to five hours with most shades). Both formulas have a sweet, vanilla scent with no discernible taste. Charlotte Tilbury Miranda May Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark pink-coral with warm undertones and a matte finish.

Bite Beauty #066 (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty To Die For (LE, $60.00) is darker (95% similar). Chanel La Favorite (43) (P, $45.00) is warmer (95% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Lost Cherry (P, $37.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tarte Top Down (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Milani I Am Happy (P, $6.99) is brighter (95% similar).

Amazing Grace is inspired by Grace Kelly, a vintage tea rose for pretty, polished perfection a la Nicole Kidman and Miranda Kerr. Tell Laura and Secret Salma are both Charlotte Tilbury's new matte formula - or as she says 'luminous modern-matte'. I laughed at this description, but after wearing the lipsticks I see what she means. I find the wear of regular CT mattes fairly comfortable and long lasting, but not as revolutionary as some claim. Well moisturised lips are a must, as they can feel drying. The Hot Lips swatch smoother and creamier, leaving little stain on the skin.

Maybelline Mauve It (DC, $7.49) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Ice Cube (DC, $5.00) is cooler (90% similar). Coloured Raine Foxy Lady (P, $17.00) is darker (90% similar). Bite Beauty Rhubarb (DC, $26.00) is warmer (90% similar).

The texture is thin but smoth, and it does feel a little clingy, though it was neither drying nor hydrating on me. The coverage was mostly opaque, not quite what I’d say is buildable (it’s pretty pigmented right out of the gate; hard to sheer it out without becoming very uneven). Chanel Tentation (238) (LE, $45.00) is darker (95% similar). Dior Forever Cherie (525) (P, $45.00) is lighter (95% similar).

Are You Ready to Buy a Home? Should You Rent? Take Our Quiz The New York Times

is it better to rent or buy a house

An apartment complex might tack on parking, elevator or garbage fees. And if you bring Rover along to your rental, you’ll usually have to pay a pet fee too. Most experts say tenure is the most important factor when deciding between renting and buying.

Other financial benefits of buying a house

And after all of this, she’s kind of ended up in the exact same thicket, with people calling for her job with the White House, the Mayor of New York City, and others. Maybe not calling on her to resign quite yet, but saying, I don’t know what’s going on your campus. And so as Isabella and her colleagues at the college newspaper see it, there’s this overall chilling effect that occurs. Some students become fearful that if they participate in any demonstrations, they’re going to face disciplinary action. So fast forward now to April, when these student protesters learned that President Shafik is headed to Washington for her congressional testimony.

Buying a home

Renting can be seen as a temporary situation, whereas buying a house is a lot more permanent and more complicated to sell (vs. getting out of a lease). After factoring in the costs of homeownership, you may find that renting may make more financial sense, allowing you to invest the money you would have put into a home into a retirement account. Mortgage interest can make up nearly all of your monthly payments in the early years of a long-term mortgage. It can take as many as 13 years before more of your payment goes toward the principal balance in a 30-year home loan.

Renting a Home

With a 15-year mortgage (the only type of mortgage I recommend) at 6.25% interest with a 20% down payment, your total monthly payment should be about $2,550 (including taxes, insurance, and HOA dues). And with $400 for utilities and other services, you’re looking at about $3,000 a month. If that number gives you heartburn, you’ll need to look for a cheaper house or keep renting.

Basic groceries like a load of bread or a half gallon of milk have average costs of $3.99 and $2.56 respectively, which are pretty close to the price throughout California. If you can save a deposit of 20% you will have more mortgage choice and be able to secure a lower interest rate on the loan. The average property price in the UK is about £286,000, according to the ONS. You would need to have saved more than £14,000 for the minimum 5% deposit. A first-time buyer will find it easier to rent a house than to buy one. This is largely because they won’t have to stump up such a large deposit to rent.

This means when you’re out at The Grove and you spend $1,000, you’ll pay $95 in taxes. For example, if you’re the type of person who likes to see a movie every week, it’s good to know a ticket costs around $17.89. If yoga is your thing, a single class can set you back $21.33.

There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe. What it seemed to evoke was the message that Hamas should murder those Jewish students. That’s the way the Jewish students interpreted it.

If you think you are being charged too much, have a conversation with your landlord to see if you can negotiate reduced rent. If you are thinking about getting on the property ladder, check out our first-time buyers’ guide. However some decisions you make right now may have an influence on what you can do in the future. Here we outline some of the pros and cons of both, wherever you are in your decision-making process. A recent report from Zillow found the average American needs to earn more than $106,000 per year to comfortably afford a home. That’s a massive jump from the $59,000 annual income needed in 2020 — an 80% increase in just four years, and it appears Americans’ average yearly income isn’t keeping up.

Should I rent or buy a house? 3 questions to ask yourself

Home buying costs more upfront, but you can get some of that back (and potentially more) when you sell the home. To match or exceed a home buyer’s return on investment, renters must invest, not spend, those savings. On the other hand, you may have good lifestyle reasons to continue renting rather than buying a home. Renting could be preferable if you'd rather not deal with the responsibility of home maintenance and the likelihood of paying for emergency repairs.

But whether you should buy or rent a house really depends on your financial situation and personal goals—nothing else. Your payments build your landlord’s equity; you come away with no additional benefits. You won’t lose money if house prices fall or a neighbor does something that lowers the home’s property value. Renting can take far less of a toll on your cash flow, however.

Deciding to rent can also give you time to raise your credit score, potentially saving you money in mortgage interest and other loan-related costs. There are also ongoing costs of owning a home—mortgage payments, maintenance, utilities, and different types of homeowners insurance. Learn more about what it costs to buy a house or use a mortgage calculator to get an idea of what you can afford. Buying and renting each have their own costs to consider - and this can make the difference between becoming a renter or a homeowner.

But even to us, we had no idea where this policy was coming from. And this suspension was really the first time that it entered most students’ sphere. So these students in real-time are beginning to test some of the things that Columbia’s president has just said before Congress. I’m taking steps in good faith to make sure that we restore order to this campus, while allowing people to express themselves freely as well. Well, they remain under investigation by the committee.

Police Across the U S. Deliberately Kettled Peaceful Protesters

Kettling has also been used in Europe, most notably during the 2009 G-20 protests in London, when police trapped nearly 10,000 people in the streets for up to seven hours. Police, for instance, told investigators that the officers atop the garage had been shooting at the walls above the crowd, not directly at people, but LaFrancois, the journalist, recalled seeing people get hit in the face, neck, and shoulders. A police official told state investigators that officers had only fired “approximately 5-6” pepper bullets from the garage’s second floor. But LaFrancois, who returned to the scene a day after the protest, photographed the markings of at least 20 bullets on the walls. Police claimed they had responded to reports that the crowd had been “large and hostile” and that someone had hurled bottles toward officers that evening. But the alleged throwing of bottles preceded the kettling by nearly an hour and took place as the protest was moving through a different part of downtown.

"I think Charlottesville really was a catalyst for much of the white supremacist chaos that has ensued since," says April Muniz, who was in the crowd when the Neo-Nazi drove his car into the counter-protesters. John Stauffer, who is president of an organization called the America Team for Displaced Eritreans, told WCNC Charlotte events similar to Saturday's are being held all over the world. HRW notes Afwerki closed all independent newspapers in 2001 and arrested 10 journalists who, as of 2023, have been held incommunicado.

“I understand you are upset but we have children out here we are not rioting or looting,” said one protest organizer. At 4 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said he is deploying 450 National Guardsman in response to the protests in multiple N.C. Officers arrived it tactical gear and attempted to disperse a hostile crowd. One of those groups was those who supported the government of the tiny African nation of Eritrea. The other consisted of those who claimed the president of that nation was a brutal dictator.

“Once in a while there would be standstill or a standoff, and the police would identify one person who seemed to be either really vocal or defiant and they would quickly move to encircle that person and pull them away,” she said. Cherrell Brown, 27, was at the EpiCentre, a commercial complex in the heart of Charlotte, where some of the protests took place. Kai Toshumba, 28, was at a protest on Tuesday in Marshall Park, south of where the main demonstrations took place.

Ambushed by the Cops: When Police Deliberately Trap Peaceful Protesters

Since Floyd’s May 25 death, protests have been carried out in cities across the country - some turning violent and destructive at times. Earlier, people gathered at Romare Bearden and held signs as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers walked through the crowds and talked with the protesters. Speakers urged fellow protesters to remain peaceful and stay safe. At that time, police said that four arrests were made, including a person who was illegally possessing a gun.

What appeared to be a peaceful night of protests against the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, turned unruly late Sunday, reports the CBS affiliate there, WBTV. It was the third straight night of demonstrations against the GOP gathering, which officially kicks off Monday. Scott’s death set off days of protests and riots in Charlotte. Police say when a crowd gathered in front of the Omni Hotel on Sept. 21, 2016, Carr was fatally wounded. Video posted to social media appeared to show over a dozen police cruisers and two officers running at the scene. Investigators were trying to determine what happened inside the residence.

For most of the day, it appeared that crowds would remain peaceful before things took a turn just before 11 p.m. Just after 8 p.m., CMPD announced firefighters had to be called in after protestors set a tractor-trailer on fire, luckily no one was hurt. CHARLOTTE — A morning protest over an international issue evolved into a violent day-long standoff in southeast Charlotte on Saturday. When they approached the residence, the suspect, later identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., fired at them with an AR-15-style rifle and a 40-caliber handgun from the second floor of a house, the police said. He was later pronounced dead in the front yard of the residence.

Putney, who stepped down less than a month later, promised an independent investigation and the release of body camera footage to show police’s side of the story. This month, two police officers were killed outside a home near Syracuse, N.Y., during a shootout after they were following up on a traffic violation. “He fought for several hours and passed away from his injuries with his wife and family by his side tonight,” Chief Jennings said in a statement posted to social media on Monday evening. “I am truly grateful for his bravery, service and ultimate sacrifice,” he said. In all, four members of the task force were shot, three of whom died.

Chauvin, who was fired along with three other officers who were at the scene, faces more than 12 years in prison if convicted of murder. Around 9 p.m., hundreds of protesters stopped at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Headquarters in uptown. About 30 minutes later, a group stopped at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and shot off fireworks. However, moments before, police were prepared for any raucous. Officers were in tactical gear, walking in walls and making sure protesters remained at peace.

Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon. According to NeighborhoodScout's analysis of FBI reported crime data, your chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes in Charlotte is one in 138. If you watched the events in Uptown Charlotte unfold on television, the most frightening part was the speed of escalation. What started as a peaceful protest attended by families with children morphed into a full-on riot with looting, vandalism, and gunshots fired faster than you could get half way through dinner.

Police initially believed there were two shooters involved in the incident, including the individual killed in the initial shootout, but Jennings said Tuesday he's not ready to say there was a second shooter. The two persons of interest are fully cooperating with the investigation and haven't been charged, he said. Saturday’s protests in Charlotte remained mostly peaceful for several hours. CMPD officers marched along with the crowd to make sure the protesters stayed safe and peaceful. On Friday and Saturday, protests turned violent during the evening hours, and it continued through the night. Police said that a large group of protests was marching on Caldwell Street.

Chhoeun watched as one officer was hit after another just nearby. New details emerged a day after police said four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, while trying to serve a warrant Monday afternoon. A suspect was killed in a shootout with police, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. Just after 11 p.m., several arrests were made when protesters reportedly threw objects at police officers near the Omni Hotel and Epicentre. More than fifteen arrests were made during demonstrations that started Sunday night and went into Monday morning, including several involving weapon charges, according to police. “One of the protesters arrested for hitting an officer in the face with a rock,” CMPD tweeted.

Though one particularly memorable moment is the way he tried to rationalise and justify his actions. He didn’t want to kill Harry… he just wanted to maim him (for his protection of course). During her time in Hogwarts's employment, Winky was heavily intoxicated with Butterbeer, due to her self-pity for being dismissed. Her colleague elves did not condone her for such actions, nor did they attempt to comfort her, as they saw her as a disgrace for not being committed to her current masters, and for drinking while on the job. However, she did participate alongside Kreacher and the other elves in the Battle of Hogwarts. However, for her master, she was willing to overcome this fear, even though she did so with great difficulty and had to cover her eyes, resulting in her inadvertently neglecting her duty of watching over Barty Jnr and allowing him to acquire a wand.

Died

Harry never actually met Hokey, but went inside her memories in the Pensieve with Dumbledore. She served Hepzibah Smith until being convicted by the Ministry of poisoning her mistress. The memory Harry witnessed was one of Voldemort’s visits to Hepzibah, where he altered Hokey’s memory after having the house-elf slip the poison into her cocoa. Kreacher was first introduced to Harry at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. He was house-elf to the Black family, and was left to Harry after Sirius’s death.

Dobby

After Harry and Kreacher make amends through the gift of Regulus’ fake locket, Kreacher is inspired to help Harry Potter defeat Voldemort. He, with the help of Dobby, rallies the house elves to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. Winky's fear of heights had led her to cover her eyes the entire time, leading her to miss Crouch, who was starting to resist the Imperius Curse, stealing a wand in the open. Following a riot instigated by Death Eaters at the camp grounds of the Quidditch Cup, Crouch Jnr was able to fight the Imperius curse and gain some control over himself. Enraged by the Death Eaters disregard for finding Voldemort, Crouch Jnr attempted to attack them but Winky thwarted this by magically binding them together, taking him into the woods by force where the Death Eaters were not present with Crouch struggling all the way. Crouch resorted to firing the Dark Mark (the sign of Lord Voldemort) into the sky during the attack with the wand he had taken in order to strike fear into the disloyal Death Eaters.

When Dobby only wanted Harry to go home grievously injured...

Ron's caution that Harry was "over the top" when he gave Regulus' locket to Kreacher was not accurate; although it did result in Kreacher falling apart emotionally, it was necessary so that he could reassemble, centered around Harry, rather than around Sirius' mother. They serve their owner in unpaid employment and take residence in their house or establishment. They do everything they are ordered and because of that, many wizards treat them unkindly and take advantage.

A veritable legion of house-elves were enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to help out the entire school instead of serving one master. They also presumably moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. Sir Nicholas explained to them that the house-elves worked in hiding, and it was considered the mark of a good house-elf that they did all the work but their existence was not even noticed. Despite the seemingly horrid lifestyle that house-elves endured, house-elves seemed to actually enjoy being enslaved.

Discover the magic

Eventually, after being given back the locket that Regulus had switched for Voldemort's real Horcrux, Kreacher grew less hostile and was happier than he had been in many years, resuming most of his expected duties. At first, Harry disliked Kreacher too – because that’s what Sirius felt – and then came to hate the house-elf after he contributed to Sirius’s death. But as time went on, and after Harry became Kreacher’s master, the relationship between the two changed.

This made finding employment a little difficult, until he was finally offered a job at Hogwarts. Dobby might just be one of the most progressive house-elves we’ve heard of – and his independent status made the other house-elves feel uncomfortable. So for all the might and power of the witches and wizards, it seemed that the only thing keeping them at the apex of power of the magical world was their certainty that they belonged there – and the equally strong conviction of the house-elves that they themselves did not. If Dobby represented one thing, it was that even the most ingrained behaviours can be changed with a little education. Better at heart, and more strongly magical, the one thing that held the house-elves back from domination was their inclination to serve.

Back at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year, Harry hears strange whispers echo through empty corridors—and then the attacks start. Out of all members of the Black family, Kreacher's bond with Regulus appeared to be the strongest. Regulus sacrificed himself to retrieve the locket, even though he could have ordered Kreacher to drink the Drink of Despair for him, showing that he truly did care about Kreacher.

Mini Minions Just a Little Shake Ornament, 1″ – $9.99

Kreacher tried to stop the members of the Order of the Phoenix from throwing away the many dark magic items with which 12 Grimmauld Place was filled, even going so far as to rescue some of them, which might be very important later (OP4, OP6, OP9, OP23). When accidentally given leave by Sirius, Kreacher went to the home of a family relation, the Malfoys. There he gave much away about Sirius and the Order (OP22, OP24, OP32, OP37).

Winky showed us the interesting trauma that a freed house-elf can go through, and Kreacher was a fascinating study into a house-elves’ allegiances. Wizards and witches are all well and good, and we obviously wish we could have a few of their powers from time to time. After centuries of being victims of abuse, prejudice and servitude, let’s never forget how incredible they are.

Dumbledore then requested Madam Pomfrey to do all she could to comfort Winky before letting Dobby look after her. One day, when Bertha Jorkins came to the household with papers for Barty Snr to sign, Winky had her wait for her master to return. Bertha caught Winky speaking with the hidden Barty Jnr, and heard enough to deduce who was underneath the Invisibility Cloak. This caused the elder Crouch to rectify the problem with a brain-damaging Memory Charm. As he climbs into the sidecar of Hagrid's motorbike and takes to the skies, leaving Privet Drive for the last time, Harry Potter knows that Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters are not far behind. The protective charm that has kept Harry safe until now is broken, but he cannot keep hiding.

Upon preparing to dismiss her, she begged and cried at his feet in a pitiful manner, to which he simply backed away as though she was something "filthy and rotten contaminating his over-shined shoes", having lost whatever previous trust and respect he had for her. When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far-from-ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run—and they say he is coming after Harry. In Harry's first-ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in his tea leaves. But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss... When Hermione discovered that Kreacher's master had been killed during his and Kreacher's mission to retrieve one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, she tried to comfort him with a hug but Kreacher appeared revolted.

We may joke about Dobby’s endless admiration of Harry, but when it came down to it, Dobby was the most loyal friend you could ask for. His love for Harry never wavered and this was most evident when he came to rescue Harry and his friends from Malfoy Manor. Dobby must have been so terrified to go back to the place and the people that had terrorised him for so many years. While we all know the tragic ending to this chapter, we want to remember the moment that Dobby stood up to his former masters and proved once and for all that he really was a free elf.

Hogwarts house-elves Fandom

house elf harry potter

At times, they seemed to desire to disobey these orders, but as their master's orders were "the house-elf's highest law", they couldn't, and were forced to punish themselves if they did. However, a house-elf might find loopholes within their master's or mistress's orders. For example, despite his loathing for Sirius Black, Kreacher could not disobey his direct orders. However, when Sirius yelled at him to "get out", which he meant to get out of the kitchen, Kreacher was able to interpret the command in a way that enabled him to leave number 12 Grimmauld Place and go to Sirius' cousins, Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. We can only dream of how awful it would be to have the Malfoys for masters.

While Hermione believed all house-elves should be liberated, the house-elves themselves had known no other life, and Winky struggled deeply to adjust to her freedom. To Kreacher’s horror, Sirius left all his belongings to Harry in his will, so Harry is Kreacher’s master now (HBP3). Rather than deal with him on a daily basis, Harry commanded Kreacher to work at Hogwarts, although Harry is still Kreacher’s master (HBP19).

Black family

Lastly, Dobby tried his most risky and dangerous plan by making a Bludger attack Harry during a Quidditch match, hoping to send him back to Privet Drive injured, but alive. This plan could not have been too well thought-out, because under normal circumstances Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse, would have been able to mend Harry's injuries instantly. However, an unfortunate blunder by Professor Gilderoy Lockhart resulted in Harry losing all the bones in his right arm. Madam Pomfrey was able to regrow the bones by using Skele-Gro, but it took an entire night. At the end of that school year, after Harry had vanquished the memory of Tom Riddle and slayed the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, he tricked Lucius Malfoy into freeing Dobby. M. Riddle's Diary inside his own sock.[14] Lucius disgustedly ripped the sock off the book and threw the sock into the air, where Dobby caught it.

Malfoy family

Winky screamed and begged in what Harry described as a pitiful manner when she was facing her master's cold remarks, which apparently did not stir his sympathies at the very least. Crouch Snr's treatment of Winky led Hermione Granger to create the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.). Winky was dedicated to her master, Barty Crouch Snr and his family, a duty passed down from her mother before her, and grandmother before that. Barty Crouch Senior's son, Barty Crouch Jnr was a convicted Death Eater who had been smuggled out of Azkaban by his father, and replaced by his terminally ill mother, disguised by using the Polyjuice Potion, as her last, dying wish. It was Winky's duty to take care of Barty Crouch Jnr, who had been placed under the Imperius Curse by his father to prevent him from running away, which she did loyally and in secret, for years.

Magic

During this rescue he was fatally wounded by Bellatrix Lestrange's knife, but successfully Apparated Harry and Griphook to safety at Shell Cottage. Harry dug Dobby's grave without magic in the gardens of Shell Cottage, and carved into the headstone of the grave "HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF". They hear and see things, as Dobby said (GF26) and can use their powerful magic and this information for doing bad (Kreacher), neutral (Winky) or good (Dobby).

Known Hogwarts house-elves

Kreacher, still reluctant to be owned by Harry, was unable to find a loophole in the orders about contacting Draco, but instead merely told Harry only about Draco's mundane daily activities. Harry Potter once remarked that house-elves were better at performing advanced magic than wizards,[6] which was testament to the impressive strength of their magical power. After the war, Winky would continue to work at Hogwarts and would eventually stop her Butterbeer addiction (although she never fully recovered from it).[7] However, it is unknown if she ever got over the losses suffered by the Crouch family. When the Death Eater responsible for the Triwizard Tournament's events was caught, Albus Dumbledore instructed Severus Snape to bring Winky to Professor Moody's office, to which they find the captured Death Eater was none other than Barty Crouch Jnr, much to Winky's shock. During the interrogation, she was distressed to find out her former master Barty Crouch Snr had been murdered, and she was completely devastated to learn that Crouch Jnr had committed the murder himself. Upon the young Crouch receiving the Dementor's Kiss from a Dementor brought in by Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge, Winky's distress deepened.

Dobby

’Dobby has no master… Dobby is a free elf,’ he told Bellatrix, shortly before his demise in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Domestic beings that were magically bound to their designated master or mistress, house-elves were usually found in the service of old wizarding families, such as Draco Malfoy's family, and were not paid. House-elves also worked in the Hogwarts kitchens, much to the shock of Hermione, who fought for house-elves' rights when she found out. The guidelines on house-elf welfare were a set of regulations passed by the British Ministry of Magic regarding the treatment of house-elves. Despite their existence at the time, these guidelines were not enforced by the Ministry of Magic by 1996,[7] and therefore many wizarding households such as the Malfoys and the Blacks mistreated their elves.

Kreacher had a bad relationship with Dobby mainly because they had, at first, opposite opinions of Harry Potter. The two house elves even got into a brawl at one point after Kreacher insulted Harry. Ron Weasley thought that Kreacher was a nutter and thus they didn't have a close relationship. Ron felt disturbed at the thought of Kreacher wandering around his room in the middle of the night and said that his life's ambition was to have his head chopped off and put on a plaque, like his mother before him.

This ultimately led to him being partially responsible for the death of Sirius Black. Had Sirius treated Kreacher the same way his brother had, his death could have been avoided. Kreacher had served the pure-blood obsessed Black family for his entire life and, like Winky, he was intensely loyal. When he was passed down to Sirius, Harry’s godfather hated Kreacher, because the house-elf reminded him of his unhappy upbringing; and Kreacher hated Sirius in return, because he had never shown him kindness for his hard work. Winky did not take kindly to the freedom situation, despite Dobby trying to comfort her about the liberty of his own life. She was embarrassed and emotional after being fired from her job, and worried about the Crouch family since she was no longer around to take care of them.

Despite this, he likely did not see a connection between the two events and merely saw both actions as service to the Black family. He also didn't seem to hold any resentment towards Voldemort for trying to kill him and showed no hesitation in helping him indirectly by luring Sirius out of hiding. This is presumably due to the way house-elves are generally treated which, as Hermione says, is not much better than what Voldemort did to him. In 1997, Harry made Kreacher tell him about Regulus Arcturus Black, who he had correctly deduced was the R.A.B. who took Salazar Slytherin's Locket from the Cave. Kreacher told Harry, Ron, and Hermione the story of the two lockets and his inability to destroy the real one. He told Harry that Mundungus Fletcher stole the real locket and Harry rewarded him with Regulus's fake locket for tracking down Mundungus.

In fact, Winky was so traumatised by the turn her life took that she even started drinking. Her Butterbeer addiction haunted her life, but she still gathered the strength to join bravely in the Battle of Hogwarts. This was not the first time Dobby used unorthodox methods to protect Harry. How about the time he cursed a Bludger to follow Harry around the Quidditch pitch, which resulted in Harry receiving a broken arm… which then became a boneless arm, thanks to Gilderoy Lockhart’s ineptitude.

However, in December of 1995, when he witnessed Harry and the Weasley children arrive by Portkey after Arthur Weasley was attacked, Sirius told him to get out of the kitchen. Kreacher took this to mean that he was allowed to leave the house and went to the Malfoy family, who were close relatives of the Blacks, and told Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange about Harry and Sirius' close relationship. In 1979, when Lord Voldemort told Regulus Black that he needed a house-elf, Regulus volunteered Kreacher, saying it would be an honour to serve the Dark Lord. Voldemort took Kreacher to the Cave and forced him to drink the potion in the basin so that Voldemort could place Salazar Slytherin's Locket in the basin. The potion, (the same one Dumbledore drank) caused Kreacher to have nightmarish delusions, intense stomach pains and made him dehydrated.

As Winky favoured being Barty Crouch's house-elf, she apparently did not think much of her new master Albus Dumbledore when she was taken in by the Headmaster of Hogwarts, despite Dumbledore's reputation as being one of the most powerful wizards known to wizardkind. She didn't seem to show much gratitude that Dumbledore was kindly willing to give her a job when she was disgraced and tossed aside coldly by the master she so much adored. Before she learned the truth about Barty Crouch Jnr's cruelty, she was initially horrified when seeing him unconscious and angrily accused Dumbledore of killing him before he confirmed Crouch Jnr was only stunned. Dumbledore also expressed utter disgust at how Crouch Jnr had so cruelly dismissed Winky's affection for him. However, considering she later participated in the Battle of Hogwarts against Voldemort and his Death Eaters alongside the other house-elves, it is possible her opinion on Dumbledore and her succeeding Masters eventually changed.

As of 2018, all passengers 21 years of age and older are required to purchase the all-inclusive beverage package in the case at least one other passenger in their cabin has one. It is popular with adults as well as older children and those that like having juices, coffee and teas. The unlimited alcohol package allows guests to enjoy as many beers, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks as they like for a fixed daily price. Royal Caribbean’s beverage packages offer unlimited drinks throughout your cruise at a fixed daily price. Those free perks could make the difference in which package you choose, if any.

How much is a Royal Caribbean drink package? (

For example, a $17 drink will see a $3 charge to your onboard account if you have the beverage package. The Cafe Select Coffee Card costs around $31 and includes 15 specialty espresso-based beverages. Note that depending on what size coffee you order, this could mean two shots are used in crafting the beverage.

Here are 18 tips that will help you decide whether or not you should get a Royal Caribbean drink package for your next cruise. Package prices on itineraries in Europe, Asia, Australia New Zealand, and South America vary (15% gratuities are included). So, whether you’re cheering with a fancy drink or just enjoying a soda, here’s to a cruise with plenty of drinks and few worries.

Why a drink package wasn't worth it for me

The drink packages also work at the cruise line's private islands of Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee. No, drinks ordered with a Royal Caribbean all-inclusive beverage packages must be ordered one at a time. Alternatively, the drink package can be purchased onboard the ship.

But you’ll want to avoid drinking the water in any public handwashing stations and instead stick to water dispensers or the bathroom in your stateroom. This means a drink package cannot be shared by more than one person. By booking a drink package early you lock in the price and guard against a price increase, but can still take advantage of a price decrease. Regardless, it's possible for there to be a price drop in the base price and in that case, you can cancel and rebook the drink package with no penalty via the Cruise Planner website.

This drink is among the most popular to order on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Not only is it the perfect drink to accompany your pool deck selfie, but it will keep you cool on the hottest of sea days. Made with rum, lime juice, fresh mint, and simple syrup, a mojito will quench your thirst unlike any other drink onboard. An Aperol spritz is often quite bitter, which leads some people to dislike the drink. In our experience, the drink is not overly bitter on Royal Caribbean ships, making it more universally enjoyed while onboard.

Ultimate Guide to Royal Caribbean Drink Packages (

Cruise lines are in the business of making sure everyone has a good time, but they reserve the right not to serve if the circumstances warrant it. Note that there will be a line on your drink receipt for additional gratuity if you are feeling generous, but it’s not required. Members of Club Royale get other benefits, too, such as a discount on Wi-Fi, an annual complimentary cruise, and more. Diamond Plus members get five daily drinks, while those in the highest tier -- Pinnacle Club -- get six.

Royal Caribbean doesn’t offer free drinks packages.

This means you can enjoy premium coffees and teas, but it doesn’t cover Starbucks. If you’re doing a fly-cruise, it’s probably not worth the hassle of bringing your own drinks on-board. But, when we cruise from the UK and don’t have a drinks package, we’ll definitely be bringing two bottles of wine and 12 cans of Pepsi Max to drink in our room to save a bit of money.

Drop us an anchor below to share your experiences with drink packages on a cruise. Plus, guests who purchase the Deluxe drink package will receive a 40% discount on bottled wines priced up to $100, and 20% discount on wine prices above $100. When it comes to the Royal Caribbean drink packages, cruisers can select from a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Below, we detail what is included in the drink packages on Royal Caribbean. However, it’s crucial to evaluate your individual needs and calculate the costs.

Likewise, shorter cruises have a tendency to have more of a party atmosphere than longer cruises. One way to save money on cocktails is to avoid getting a cocktail in a souvenir glass. Usually the “daily specials” are served by default by the bar waiters who walk along the pool deck. So if you have full details of all of Royal Caribbean’s bar prices you can work out whether the drink package is worth it for you or not.

It is worth noting the drink prices across Royal Caribbean's fleet do vary to some degree. Specifically, drink prices on Oasis or Quantum Class ships are usually a bit more expensive (50 cents to one dollar more) than on other ships in the fleet. Following the conclusion of the righting operation, the ship was kept on the platform while further inspections were made and the starboard sponsons attached. In a first step to prevent pollution of the shore and assist in a refloat the ship, its oil and fuel tanks were emptied. Ashley Peterson, a passenger on the ship, tweeted a photo of a Dec. 22 letter from the ship's captain apologizing for being unable to make stops in Aruba and Bonaire. The letter said passengers would get $100 per room in onboard credit, as well refunds for planned excursions. Several passengers, including Brenda Goodwin Sherbert, posted on social media about broken glass on the ship. The ship left the northern city of Tromsoe carrying almost 1,400 people, despite storm warnings.

It was headed for Stavanger in southern Norway when it had engine problems amid a storm on March 23, 2019, and issued a mayday call. But while en route to the Spanish seaside town on the edge of the Bay of Biscay, the captain received word that the port at La Coruña would be closed because of bad weather. Hoping to stay ahead of the storm, the captain decided to start routing Spirit of Discovery back to the U.K. The calamity caused changes in the cruise industry like carrying more lifejackets and holding emergency drills before leaving port.

During the 19-month trial, prosecutors claimed that he was an “idiot,” while Schettino countered that his actions had saved lives and that he was being scapegoated. In addition, he noted the steering error by the helmsman, but a maritime expert testified that regardless of the mistake, the collision was unavoidable. In February 2015 Schettino was convicted on all charges and sentenced to more than 16 years in prison. He appealed the verdict, but it was upheld in May 2017; Schettino began serving his sentence shortly thereafter. Costa Concordia disaster, the capsizing of an Italian cruise ship on January 13, 2012, after it struck rocks off the coast of Giglio Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Several of the ship’s crew, notably Capt. Francesco Schettino, were charged with various crimes.

The ship reportedly headed into 40-knot winds and 30-foot swells, and thus, the typical sail-away outdoor deck party with British entertainers Moss and Tracy Hills was moved to an indoor lounge. The sea conditions worsened that night, leading to the ship rolling from side to side, and eventually, an explosion was heard due to a lack of repairs for the waste disposal system. This all led to the ship losing power and water filling its generator room, so the generators were shut down and the ship was led adrift. A distress call was sent and answered by numerous South African helicopters and a Dutch container ship. Shockingly, the captain and many crew members were among the first to be airlifted to shore, leaving the entertainment staff to coordinate the rescue efforts and help passengers to safety.

The 19-hour process involved specially built underwater platforms, cranes, and some 500 people. In July 2014 the Concordia—outfitted with a number of steel containers serving as flotation devices—was towed to Genoa, Italy, where it was dismantled for scrap. But the report noted that some passengers testified that they didn’t hear the alarm to proceed to the lifeboats. Evacuation was made even more chaotic by the ship listing so far to starboard, making walking inside very difficult and lowering the lifeboats on one side, near to impossible.

But still, you would not want to be stuck on any of these unfortunate maritime adventures. "Carnival Freedom is following all protocols and has a small number on board who are in isolation due to a positive COVID test," the statement said. "Our protocols anticipate this possibility and we implement them as necessary to protect the health and safety of our guests and crew." The National Hurricane Center on Friday warned of a non-tropical area of low pressure off Florida that was set to move northward and inland over the Carolinas during the weekend.

While onboard, there was no Depression to worry about and no Prohibition, which meant plenty of booze-filled partying. However, the September 1934 return sail from Cuba to the Big Apple seemed cursed. On September 7, Captain Robert Wilmott complained of stomach trouble after eating dinner and retired to his cabin, where he later died of an apparent heart attack. The crew’s attempts to fight the fire were haphazard and inadequate, and soon, the blaze couldn’t be contained. Many crew members abandoned the ship, leaving confused passengers to fend for themselves in the dark, smoky hallways.

This list is full of the worst cruise ship disasters in history, from disease outbreaks, to power outages, to shipwrecks. Passengers aboard the Carnival Sunshine described shattered glass, water pouring into rooms and hallways, the ship pitching about and a lack of communication from cruise staff. Some passengers and crew members needed "minor assistance" from medical staff, a Carnival cruise spokesman told CBS News. A storm off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, battered a Carnival cruise ship for hours late Friday night before it docked, leaving passengers terrified.

Making things worse, the crew had dropped the anchor incorrectly, causing the ship to flop over even more dramatically. "We operate to the highest health and safety protocols and every decision was made based on advice from the ship's Master and forecasts from our dedicated marine meteorologists," Banks said in his statement. The total cost of the disaster, including victims' compensation, refloating, towing and scrapping costs, is estimated at $2 billion, more than three times the ship's $612 million construction cost. Costa Cruises offered compensation to passengers (to a limit of €11,000 per person) to pay for all damages, including the value of the cruise; one third of the survivors took the offer.

Passengers struggled to escape in the darkness, clambering to get to the life boats. Alaska resident Nate Lukes was with his wife, Cary, and their four daughters aboard the ship and remembers the chaos that ensued as the ship started to sink. Cruise ships have seen a 30-fold increase in Covid-19 cases over two weeks due to the highly contagious omicron variant, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a Senate hearing Tuesday. This list will make you think twice about going on that cruise to the Caribbean.

The Costa Concordia was owned by Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & PLC. When launched in 2005, it was Italy’s largest cruise ship, measuring 951 feet (290 metres) long with a passenger capacity of 3,780; by comparison, the Titanic was 882.5 feet (269 metres) long and could accommodate up to 2,435 passengers. It featured four swimming pools, a casino, and reportedly the largest spa on a ship. In July 2006 the vessel undertook its maiden voyage, a seven-day cruise of the Mediterranean Sea, with stops in Italy, France, and Spain.

On Mexico's Pacific Coast, ports might include Huatulco, offering access to an iguana sanctuary and ecological park, or Puerto Vallarta, where you can enjoy a snorkel trip to Los Arcos de Mismaloya. Many cruise lines also call on Nassau in the Bahamas and their own Bahamian private islands, where beach days are sublime. Some longer itineraries (10 nights or more) also combine Eastern and Southern ports of call with less-visited islands such as St. Kitts and Antigua. Kauai is the place to admire the 50th State's lushest rainforests and to cruise past the scenic cliffs of the Napali Coast. And with two ports of call on the Island of Hawaii, you'll enjoy the waterfalls of Hilo (along with access to Volcanoes National Park) and the sunny Kona coast, where snorkel trips and coffee farm visits are popular.

Equally captivating is Stockholm, where a stroll through Old Town (Gamla Stan) will take you back to medieval times. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at a doomed 17th-century wooden warship, and a few hours in the ABBA Museum will have you humming the band's hits for hours afterward. Be sure to pluck a plumeria blossom and place it behind your left ear — to signify that your heart is spoken for. On a round-trip cruise, you'll call on Juneau, Alaska's remote capital that's reachable solely by sea or air and offers access to Mendenhall Glacier. Other top ports are Ketchikan, known for wet-suit snorkeling and floatplane flightseeing; Skagway, where you can combine an invigorating hike and a relaxing river float trip; and Icy Strait Point, a top spot for sea kayaking and whale watching. It's impossible to choose since every island is fringed by talcum-soft sand and warm turquoise water and is home to lively beach bars offering music and tropical cocktails that will make your day in the sun all the more fun.

If Israel and Jordan are must-visits, look for a cruise with Holy Lands in its title. These sailings often depart from Athens and also call on several Greek islands and Cyprus. Or you can cruise from Venice, with its splendid 11th-century Basilica of San Marco and palazzo-lined canals, across the Adriatic to the coast of Croatia. These sailings typically call on Split (home to Diocletian's Palace, which dates to the 4th century) and Dubrovnik (with its postcard-perfect 13th-century walled Old Town), as well as the island nation of Malta (realm of the Knights of St. John). For example, cruises often begin in Istanbul, home to the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the elaborate Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616. Ports of call also in Turkey may include Kusadasi for the nearby Roman city of Ephesus and its wondrous Library of Celsus.

You can eat your fill of local cuisine in places such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Marseille and Saint-Tropez in France, and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa), Rome and Naples in Italy. The sophisticated capitals of Scandinavia — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki — plus other coastal cities such as Tallinn, Estonia and Gdansk, Poland, are each compelling in their own right. So, imagine the rush of urban euphoria you'll feel while exploring all of them on a Baltic (or Northern Europe) cruise from May through September. It offers an incredible 46,600 miles of coastline (longer than the shorelines of all the lower 48 states combined) and a unique and plentiful mix of wildlife. When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica. The seventh continent, a place that belongs to no single nation but hosts research stations from almost 30, has fascinated adventurers for decades.

The cruise line’s Valiant Lady ship was en route to Roatán, Honduras, when staff announced there had been a “medical emergency” involving a passenger. Fortunately, falling from a cruise ship balcony is a rare occurrence - and falling directly into the ocean is even less likely. The ship was back in Miami early Sunday and has since set sail again with an adjusted itinerary; Roatán is no longer a destination. The vessel will head for Cozumel rather than Costa Maya on Wednesday, says the spokesperson. Business Insider reports that the passenger, who has not been identified, fell onto another person. The 110,000-gross-ton ship can welcome 2,700 guests per sailing, and is currently homeported from Miami offering Caribbean sailings.

The company added that it’s working closely with local officials as they kick off an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death. In 2022, one passenger survived 15 hours in the ocean after he fell off a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico. “This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away,” the cruise line said in a statement.

The cruise ship was immediately turned around and returned to Miami following the death. The driver, who has not been identified, allegedly stepped out of the vehicle without realizing the shuttle was still moving. A nearby bystander reportedly alerted him of what was happening and he quickly jumped into the driver’s seat to attempt to stop the vehicle. "After the incident, the ship was immediately redirected back to Miami, where the team are working closely with local officials."

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Lines said nine of its guests, who traveled on Carnival Miracle were struck by the bus. The ship had departed from Long Beach, California, on April 6 for a 15-day trip. When the ship later returned to Charleston on March 4, an FBI team of investigators boarded the cruise and examined the woman's room. The woman had been travelling with her husband, a statement from the operator said. The cruise ship, Carnival Sunshine, had departed from Charleston, South Carolina on February 27 and was heading to the Bahamas.

It is believed that the ship returned to Miami following the tragic incident with local officials working to determine what led to the woman's fall. The woman is thought to have been on the balcony before falling over and landing on to another passenger, who remarkably came away unscathed. "I just started my FIRST cruise with Virgin Voyages… and someone fell from their balcony and died,' tweeted passenger Mel Murray following the incident.
